The lower back is composed of five lumbar vertebra, five sacral vertebra (fused into the sacrum) and the tailbone. Between each of the vertebrae is and inter-vertebral disc which acts as a shock absorber for the spine. The main stabilizer of the lower back is the core muscles.

Back pain is one of the most common conditions treated by physiotherapists. Back pain can originate from many sources including muscles, ligaments, discs, nerves or joints. Causes of low back pain can include;

  • repetitive bending
  • poor lifting technique
  • car accidents
  • Computer work
  • poor posture and twisting.

Treatments for those experiencing low back pain can include; massage, joint mobilization, traction, strengthening exercises of both core and back muscles, stretching and, advice on posture and improving work ergonomics.
